[사진으로 본 세계] 2020 퓰리처상 발표, 사진부문 '홍콩 시위' 작품 수상

퓰리처상 이사회은 지난 5월 4일, 2020 올해의 퓰리처상 수상작을 선정해 발표했다.

사진보도 부문 ‘속보 사진’에서는 홍콩 시위 현장을 긴박하게 담은 로이터통신이 수상했다. 다음은 홍콩 민주 시민들이 중국에 항거하는 시위대의 모습과 경찰 진압을 현장감 있게 포착한 로이터통신의 취재사진들을 모은 것이다.

자유를 향한 처절한 몸부림

2020 퓰리처상 ‘속보사진’ 부문 수상작

 

2019년 9월 2일 홍콩 몽콕에서 경찰과 시위대 간 충돌이 있었다, 이때 경찰에 의해 억류된 한 여성이 처절하게 몸부림치는모습을 로이터통신 사진기자는 이 절박한 순간을 사진으로 담았다.

 

이 사진은 ‘2020 퓰리처상 속보사진’ 부문상을 수상하는 영예를 안았다. 작년 6월 중국으로의 ‘범죄인 송환법’ 반대로 시작된 홍콩의 시위는 중국 정부로부터의 억압에서 벗어나 자유를 갈망하는 민주화 운동으로 번지며 세계 각국의 지지를 받았는데, 실질적으로 중국의 민주화는 홍콩에서 시작의 서막을 올리는 것과 같았다.

그러나 한편으로는 홍콩 시위 취재 사진이 2020 퓰리처상 사진보도 부문에서 수상한 것과 관련해 중국에서 비난 여론이 빗발치고 있다고 한다. 중국의 입장에서는 사살상 보여주고 싶지 않은 것이 전 세계에 공개된 것이니 얼마나 쪽 팔리는 일이겠는가?

 

그래서 인가? 오늘 7일 중국 글로벌타임스는 미국 언론인들에게 가장 영향력 있는 퓰리처상이 홍콩시위의 일방적인 정보만 전달한 로이터 사진 기록들을 수상작으로 선정함으로써 이중잣대와 편견을 보여주고 중국 대중에게 명성을 잃었다고 보도했다고 하는데 이 또한 자신들의 잣대이다.

 

중국의 입장에서 홍콩 시위에 대해 부끄럽게 생각한다면 무엇이 부끄러운지 스스로 중국은 알아야 할 것이다.
